Seriously, this is bullshit. Eating healthy all the time is not cheap and in this economy not everybody can afford to make the healthier choices. Affordable feeding your family > eating “healthy”
GUYS! GUYS! I figured it out! See the “Great Value” brand labels in some of these images? Whoever this is went into a Walmart. Great Value is one of Walmart’s second tier generic brands (their first being Sam’s Choice).
Unfortunately, whoever made this? Not everybody is as lucky as you are. The closest Walmart to me does not have a proper supermarket area. We are not offered an option for produce at the one near me, so we need to go elsewhere, like Whole Foods or whatever other supermarkets we have near me. I don’t think the person making these images took this shit into account, because nothing is that fucking cheap at any of the supermarkets near me. At all.
Whole Foods is way overpriced compared to normal supers too. At least here it is.
Also Walmart is evil and even if it wasn’t a long transit + walking trip to shop there, I’d still avoid buying groceries there if not desperate. :/
The only two places I can go grocery shopping are the Commissary and WalMart. WalMart’s prices are nowhere near that damn low. The Commissary is cheaper and you don’t have tax, but it still doesn’t get that damn low. Take the chicken breasts for instance. Tyson chicken breasts are a little over $4 at the Commissary. Whoever made these graphics is lying their ass off.
And what the fuck are people supposed to do when they live in a food desert? Fresh produce don’t last, homie. I’m so done with this evangelical “healthy living” bullshit like folks got equal access to all food.
As many above have stated, the issue of healthy eating is a lot more complex than people choosing to eat unhealthy food. Food deserts are a real phenomenon, especially in low income urban areas with high concentrations of POC. Just because the maker of the above images had access to cheap produce and other healthy food staples, it doesn’t mean that others have the same luck.
I live near the California Bay Area, and I consider myself blessed to live in an area that has a lot of easily accessible and cheap grocery stores, ethnic markets, and farmers markets. However, I’m also aware of the fact that many of my fellow POC aren’t as lucky as I am and actually have a really difficult time trying to stock up on food staples due to traveling distance, food availability, limited food budget, etc.
